Giovanni da Verrazano
Giovanni da Verrazano was a Florentine explorer of North America, who was sent to map America's coast and find a route through to Asia. He mapped from what is today known as North Carolina north to Newfoundland but found no path to Asia. Unfortunately, ten years later, the French tried again, but this time with Jacques Cartier. Verrazano is renowned as the first European to explore the Atlantic coast of North America in 1524.
Jacques Cartier
Jacques Cartier was a French explorer of Breton, who took over for Giovanni da Verrazano in looking a path to Asia. He sailed past Newfoundland and entered the St. Lawrence River. France stopped exploring after two more trips. However, Cartier is known for being the first European to travel inland in North America.
